Dixieland Parade 2026 canceled
Administrative delays force cancellation
The Dixieland Parade 2026 will not take place – and we are sorry
Anyone who knows the INTERNATIONAL DIXIELAND FESTIVAL knows this feeling: the last day of the festival belongs to the parade. You plan your Sunday around it, find a spot in the Old Town, and wait for the first sounds to draw nearer from somewhere in the distance. It has been that way since 1978. On May 17, 2026, it will be different.
The Dixieland Parade will not take place this year. This news hits us as the organizers just as hard as it does you – and we owe you an honest explanation.
What happened
We did not cancel the parade lightly. On the contrary: we did everything we could to save it.
As early as August 2025, we submitted all applications to the City of Dresden in full, including route planning and all required documents. In February 2026, detailed follow-up applications were submitted. What we had not received by April 30, 2026: specific requirements for how the parade route was to be secured. We first received these requirements in a security consultation on April 30 — ten days before the festival began, immediately ahead of a long holiday weekend. We received the permit for special use on May 5. The notice from the road traffic authority followed on May 6, four days before the festival began.
The administration had eight months to provide us with this information. It did not.
Why we still could not simply improvise
What was required of us at short notice: anti-vehicle-ramming protection measures, additional security personnel, materials and equipment—none of that can be organized over a long weekend. Not for an event of this size. Not by a volunteer team that is simultaneously preparing the entire festival. And not without legally binding notices that make contracts with partners possible in the first place.
We still tried. And we had to admit: it is not possible.
Who bears responsibility for this
The parade is not being canceled because we failed. It is being canceled because a city administration took eight months to tell us requirements that could have been on the table long ago. Planning certainty is not a request for a festival of our size; it is a basic requirement. That basic requirement was not provided to us.
Dresden is a wonderful host city. But what has happened here must not become the new normal, not for us and not for any other event in this city.
The festival is taking place – and we look forward to seeing you
The parade has been cancelled. The 54th INTERNATIONAL DIXIELAND FESTIVAL Dresden has not.
From 10 to 17 May 2026, bands from Europe, Germany and Dresden will play in clubs, halls and on stages throughout the city. Traditional jazz, swing and New Orleans sound at the level that has made this festival the largest and oldest of its kind in the world. Come to Dresden. The music is waiting for you.
